Meeting Margaux Keller: Rethinking the Provençal imagination
Educated at Olivier de Serres and later the École Boulle, Margaux Keller honed her craft alongside renowned names such as Philippe Starck, Eugeni Quitllet, and Sam Baron before establishing her own agency in Marseille in 2011. Her work can be summed up in a few words: poetic, unconventional, colorful, and joyful. In the Luberon, the proud owner fully indulged her creativity in her vacation home-turned-showroom, La Maïoun.

Margaux, can you introduce yourself and talk about your background?
Margaux: I am a designer and interior architect originally from Marseille. After spending time in Paris, where I studied at École Boulle and collaborated with Philippe Starck, among others, I continued my journey with a year in Italy at Fabrica.
Following experiences with design publishers and luxury brands, I felt inspired to launch my own design house in 2019, alongside my business partner, Anaïs Frétigny. Together, we founded Margaux Keller Collections, an eponymous brand that celebrates design, artisanal craftsmanship, and a commitment to short supply chains.

What are your sources of inspiration when designing interiors, furniture, and decorative elements?
Beyond practicality, what do you want to convey through the objects you design?
Margaux:I take inspiration from my childhood in Provence, drawing on its traditions, joyful and bold color harmonies, natural and vernacular materials, and the beauty of everyday practices. I carefully observe how lifestyles evolve, using these insights to adapt interiors to the needs and desires of modern living.
Margaux: I’ve always felt the need to add a third dimension to the products I design. While aesthetics and functionality are the foundations of any design object, I realized early on that incorporating an emotional element was essential. This approach helps forge a deeper connection with the objects we use, creating a bond that feels more meaningful and enduring.
How did the desire to create a vacation home come about?
I was fortunate to spend my childhood holidays at my grandparents’ house, nestled between Hyères and Toulon—a Provençal bastide with a pink façade and green shutters. That house was a true oasis, a place where joy and freedom reigned and family gathered.
When I was 17, my grandparents had to sell it, and it was heartbreaking. From that moment, I promised myself that one day, I would create a space where family and friends could come together again. It became my dream, a life goal.

How did you design the Margaux Keller vacation home?
I designed it with my childhood home in mind, often reflecting on that cherished place. I wanted the Provence of the past to resonate while coexisting with my more contemporary creations. Here, modern art and design harmonize with ceramic santons and decorative wall plates. I envisioned a serene space, one that feels protective and fosters joy and togetherness among its inhabitants.
What, in your opinion, makes the perfect vacation home?
The exceptional setting: nestled in the heart of lavender fields, where, in July, the nearby distillery fills the air with unforgettable scents. The reimagined Provençal comfort: the house stays naturally cool, eliminating the need for air conditioning even in the summer, maintaining a refreshing atmosphere despite the heat. And the décor: unique, personalized, joyful, and warmly inviting.
