Cabin getaways are having a moment!
When we think of a cabin, we often picture a small rustic house, stripped of comfort and modern conveniences. But not anymore! Today, inspired architects, interior designers, and owners have reimagined (or even built from scratch) charming cottages that are perfect for cozy gatherings with your closest circle.
From the Périgord with its wooden houses perched high among the trees—a refreshing break from the region’s traditional stone longhouses—and the Arcachon Basin with its charming waterside cabins, here’s a grand tour of France’s most inviting retreats. Perfect places to unpack your (small) suitcase and settle in.
The most enchanting cabin
nestled in the heart of the Landes canopy
The terrace of La Cabane du Moulin.
Nestled on the edge of a forest in the heart of a pristine nature reserve, this spacious cabin made from Landes pine is a true enchanted retreat, evoking childhood dreams. This dream-turned-reality belongs to Greg and Amélie, two modern explorers who once sketched their ideal home in a notebook. Incredibly, that sketch mirrors La Cabane du Moulin almost exactly.
Perfect for travelers seeking to reconnect with nature, the cabin is set within a sprawling 7,000 m² park, surrounded by pine forests, fishponds, and winding streams. The multi-level wooden terrace features a large heated pool with a secure electric cover, ensuring safety for children. These welcoming and thoughtfully designed spaces, ideal for unforgettable summer days, are the result of collaboration between an architect and a landscape carpenter.
A shaded, elevated terrace invites moments of relaxation and shared outdoor meals, perhaps inspired by the owners’ love of plant-based cuisine.

Inside, the refined bohemian style celebrates natural materials in soft, sandy tones, perfectly capturing the home’s slow-living spirit. The studio, which can be transformed into a yoga or meditation space, is adorned with Danish 366 Concept chairs, combining comfort with timeless elegance. The master suite, featuring a shaggy rug, a cathedral ceiling, and woven wall hangings, strikes the perfect balance between minimalism and bohemian charm. The three additional bedrooms, tucked away at the edge of the woods, are cozy retreats with warm hues and carefully chosen textures.
Every piece of furniture tells a story: carefully sourced by the owners from antique shops and flea markets, particularly in Charente-Maritime, these unique finds—like the large farmhouse table that seats up to twelve or the stunning workshop hutch—reflect their passion for restoring and repurposing vintage treasures. The harmony between the cozy, vintage ambiance of the interior and the surrounding nature invites you to relax on the living room sofas or lose yourself in a book amid the lush greenery.
A chic cabin
nestled among the Burgundy vineyards
Nestled at the heart of the estate’s vineyards, Casa Ladoit seems to naturally flourish in this lush setting. Margaux, the creative mind behind this home, carefully selected a raised structure on stilts, without foundations, to protect the soil of the former orchard. The choice of wood was a natural one, aiming to respect the surrounding vegetation and create architecture in perfect harmony with nature. In Margaux’s vision, the wood speaks for itself, making any intrusive decorations, paint, or wallpaper unnecessary.

Wood is the star of the interiors at Casa Ladoit.
With a strong ecological focus, special attention was given to insulation, allowing a simple wood stove to comfortably heat the 90 m² home. When summer is in full swing, the terrace, shaded by a pergola adorned with climbing wisteria, becomes a refreshing haven.
Inside, a large, bright, and inviting central living space features an open kitchen, perfect for shared moments. Surrounding this living area are three cozy bedrooms and a bathroom. Casa Ladoit embodies the very essence of a warm, family home, designed to be both simple, functional, and in perfect harmony with its surroundings.
A cabin
perched in the woods of the Périgord Noir
After exploring the Périgord in search of the perfect plot of land, the owner of La Petite Maison Noire faced a major challenge: securing approval to build on a UNESCO World Heritage site. Drawing inspiration from the rich local heritage, two options were available: the traditional Périgord house or the blackened wood tobacco barn. It was the latter that shaped the vision for the project, giving birth to La Petite Maison Noire.
The design of this unique home’s structure was developed in close collaboration with Sapiens Architects. Created to accommodate up to 8 people, it features two bedrooms and two cabin-style beds, perfect for hosting family and guests.
Built on stilts, the house preserves the natural soil by raising the ground floor, which opens onto a spacious suspended terrace. A catamaran net, resembling a giant hammock, adds a playful and unique touch to this elegant architecture, seamlessly blending with its surroundings.

A cabin
by the Arcachon Bay
La Cabane des Barbots Bleus surrounded by its neighbors.
With your feet in the water at La Cabane des Barbots Bleus.
Nestled along a port inlet and at the foot of the coastal trail, La Cabane des Barbots Bleus perfectly embodies the art of living in the Arcachon Bay. This charming wooden house with blue shutters is the ideal spot for a family or a group of friends, just five minutes from the beaches and oyster shacks.
With three double bedrooms and a dormitory, it can accommodate up to eight guests, offering far more space than you’d expect from a cabin. The real highlight? A vast 100 m² terrace, perfect for living in sync with the tides. You can practice yoga at dawn (mat provided), enjoy breakfast while listening to the seagulls and the gentle lapping of the water, or simply relax while taking in the view.
The perfect vacation home to explore the treasures of the Arcachon Bay and enjoy the sea at any time of the day.
In Normandy,
a stylish and self-sufficient cabin for rent
Welcome to Cabane Bocage ! © Charly Derouet
In the heart of the rolling hills of the Norman bocage, Cabane Bocage is the perfect retreat for a total escape. Nestled in a small village of 250 residents, this 55 m² wooden cottage offers a complete immersion in nature, thanks to its self-sufficient and eco-friendly design.
With two bedrooms, an open-plan living area with a kitchen, and a bathroom, it can accommodate up to four guests in a setting featuring modern, minimalist design. Behind this project is a true enthusiast: photographer Charly Derouet, who played an active role in building his dream cabin. Completed in the spring of 2023, the cabin sits on the remnants of an old fisherman’s shelter dating back to the 1960s.
The cabin’s design reimagines the history of the site while incorporating techniques and inspirations drawn from Charly’s experiences in Australia and the United States. For the exterior cladding, he chose the Japanese technique of charred wood, shou sugi ban, which gives the structure a timeless look while providing long-lasting protection against the elements.
Its single-pitched roof allows for rainwater harvesting, an essential resource for this off-grid location, which is not connected to water or electricity networks (though occasional power outages may occur). The cabin prioritizes the use of local and recycled materials: wood, abundant throughout, adorns the interior walls, forms the flooring in the living area, and blends seamlessly with the surrounding landscape.
