Our guide to find your dream vacation home in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence
If Provence were a village, it would undoubtedly be Saint-Rémy-de-Provence. Once known as Glanum in Roman times, the town’s rich historical, cultural, and artistic heritage makes it especially popular in the summer. Aspiring archaeologists will be captivated by the Gallo-Roman ruins, while those who love the southern lifestyle can spend their days strolling through narrow streets, fountain-adorned squares, and Provençal markets. Art enthusiasts? Saint-Rémy was home to Vincent Van Gogh, one of the greatest painters of the late 19th century, who now has a museum dedicated to him. For hikers, it’s time to gain some altitude in the Alpilles Regional Natural Park – a range that promises a vacation as fantastic as it is elevated – to view Saint-Rémy-de-Provence from a new perspective. Destination approved.
So, where should we stay? Provence is known for its country houses and grand farmhouses! These traditional mas, lovingly restored by inspired owners, offer the perfect retreat for a vacation in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence. Prefer a home with a rooftop in the heart of town or a mas with a sprawling garden just outside the center for added privacy? Every corner of the city has its dream vacation home! All that’s missing are the best spots for restaurants, cafés, bars, and beaches to complete the picture. And guess what? We’ve got you covered!
Vacation in the heart of the city
The rooftop at La Maison des Remparts: sunshine and views over the rooftops of Saint-Rémy-de-Provence.
La Maison des Remparts, nestled within the medieval fortifications of the old town.
Located in the heart of Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, La Maison des Remparts is a former part of the medieval fortifications of the old town. This centuries-old structure, which can host up to ten guests, has been thoughtfully preserved and reimagined by Jean and Arthur, two locals turned architects and partners at Bosc Architectes, agency created by their father.
Given the prime location of this stylish townhome, there’s no shortage of must-visit spots nearby. Start the day at Colette Café, a cheerful coffee shop where you can enjoy specialty coffee alongside a homemade cookie.
After refueling, take a stroll through the halls of the Estrine Museum, dedicated to contemporary art and Vincent van Gogh. Time for a bit of history! The Dutch painter arrived in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence in May 1889 following a violent breakdown (the one during which he cut off his earlobe). Coming from Arles, he admitted himself to the Saint-Paul de Mausole clinic-monastery, where he stayed for an entire year. It was in his small hospital room that he experienced one of the most productive periods of his career, creating nearly 150 paintings and numerous drawings, including Starry Night, Almond Blossoms, and Irises. While the originals are housed in Paris and Amsterdam, the visit is well worth it to gain insight into the life of this brilliant yet troubled artist.
After a morning of culture, it’s time to grab a bite. Head to Tête d’Ail for authentic Provençal cuisine, or for a more gourmet experience, visit L’Auberge de Saint-Rémy, which boasts a Michelin star. Both are just minutes from La Maison des Remparts, making it easy to return for a post-lunch nap on the terrace, with views of the Alpilles. For those still full of energy, take a stroll through the town’s narrow streets and fill your bag with local delicacies to bring home. Our favorite spots? The gourmet shop Entre Sel et Terre and the wine merchant Ballon 2 Rouge. The day ends as beautifully as it began, to the rhythm of the South, under the Provençal sun.

The landscape around Mas de Cinq Sous.
South of the city center:
stunning vacation villas with a countryside feel
South of the historic city center, lush estates almost make you forget you’re still in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence. Start with Le Mas de Cinq Sous, an elegant property designed for eight guests, located at the foot of the Alpilles and featuring a natural pool. Nestled within a 5-hectare estate, this meticulously restored 250 m² Provençal home blends tradition with modern luxury.
Breakfast is served at a marble table under the pergola, with delicious wood-fired bread and pastries from the bakery Terre et Blé. The bakery also doubles as a restaurant, which we highly recommend for lunch, mainly to try the seasonal vegetable focaccias. All ingredients are organic and sourced from Alpilles Bio, another must-visit spot for stocking up on local goodies.

Another highly recommended property for a stay in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, away from the summer crowds but still close to the city center, is Mas des Amis! This Provençal retreat, surrounded by vineyards and olive groves, offers a charming village atmosphere.
Accommodating up to 16 guests between the main house, the pool house, the guest house, and two caravans, there’s plenty of space for everyone. And with 10,000 m² of outdoor space, no one will feel cramped. It’s a realm of possibilities where everyone can reinvent their daily routine and enjoy the freedom to relax and explore.

Just a ten-minute walk away, the restaurant Songes is worth a dinner visit. It features a charming hidden terrace (at the Hôtel de Sade) where you can enjoy dishes from residency chefs. Pair your meal with a sunny cocktail created by bartender Vincent Diener.

The must-see near the house? The archaeological site of Glanum and its ancient ruins. Further along, the road leads to Les Baux-de-Provence, another picturesque village that’s a must-visit during a Provence vacation. From the castle ruins, the panoramic view of the Alpilles is breathtaking. For hiking enthusiasts, it’s paradise! Explore Lac de Peïrou, the Caume plateau, or the Mont Gaussier ladder trail—just don’t forget to pack a picnic! For that, we recommend Fromagerie de Camille or the large Provençal market held every Wednesday morning in the center of Saint-Rémy-de-Provence.

a mas designed by Alexandre Lafourcade for holidays in the heart of a vast, lush garden
Just a stone’s throw from Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, the luxurious Provençal Mas le Gaudre is the creation of renowned local architect Alexandre Lafourcade. Nestled in the heart of a vast, lush garden, it features a pool, a vegetable garden, an orangery, and a tea house, making it perfect for a holiday that blends indoor and outdoor living.
Accommodating up to 16 guests, the large terrace is ideal for hosting a Provençal feast with local cheeses from Le Mazet Gourmand, wines from Domaine de Lagoy, and dishes from the caterer Milligramme. Another equally delightful option is Court Circuit, a restaurant and grocery offering vegetarian and locally sourced cuisine.
