"The resort is located at a high elevation and offers a stunning, unobstructed view of the mountains."

Built in the 1970s by a local carpenter, Chalet Melzerata—meaning ‘larch forest’—was completely renovated in 2020 by Caroline and Julien Escande, owners and founders of the hotel property collection Les Maisons Escapia, which is already making its mark in the Landes region with a contemporary villa favored by surfers, Villa Arranca, and a beautifully restored 19th-century building, Airial du Branasse.

Unlike the smaller, more traditional buildings in the area, Chalet Melzerata stands out with its bold, angular design. Preserving its unique character throughout the renovation, the chalet is structured as a spacious cube that spans five half-levels. At its heart is a central staircase that connects three double bedrooms, a six-bed dormitory, and two bathrooms, creating a modern yet cozy mountain retreat.

Located in the heart of the picturesque La Pierre Saint-Martin resort, Chalet Melzerata offers easy access to everything: skiing, hiking, and leisurely walks through the village or surrounding nature—all just a short stroll away. After a day of outdoor adventure, adults can unwind in the sauna while kids enjoy a cartoon on the projector. The cherry on top? An attentive concierge service ready to cater to every guest’s needs. Welcome to Chalet Melzerata!

When Caroline and Julien embark on renovating a new property, they take their cues from the local environment, integrating it into the atmosphere, materials, and décor. For Chalet Melzerata, they collaborated with Léo and Marie from Plan B studio in Hossegor, aiming to preserve its distinctive Scandinavian design—unusual for the Pyrenees—while reimagining the layout.

Originally dark and enclosed to protect against mountain winds, the duo transformed the space by adding large bay windows, flooding the interior with light and panoramic views. At the same time, they ensured top-notch insulation to keep the chalet warm and energy-efficient. The result? Chalet Melzerata feels both fresh and revitalized.

Once the structure of Chalet Melzerata was transformed, the focus shifted to the interiors. Local materials were prioritized: larch wood was used for the walls and ceilings in the bedrooms and common areas, while rough stone sourced from Spain—just a short drive away—was featured in the ski room and bathrooms.

For the furnishings, simplicity was key, with much of the furniture integrated into the structure itself, like the built-in bow window, bunk beds, and shelves. The décor pays homage to mountain life, with pieces collected from places like New Zealand and Canada. A deer head adds a striking touch in the living area, while animal hides cover the floors. Wool fabrics, created in collaboration with La Méricaine, bring a festive burst of color to the beds and sofas. “We wanted to bring in Alpine aesthetic codes, which are less common in the Pyrenees,” they explained. The result? A cozy, inviting retreat where you can easily imagine curling up by the window, watching the snow fall on the village below.

"The sauna and the bow window with breathtaking views of the valley and its unforgettable sunsets are the standout features of the chalet."

The Pyrenees
have won us over

The Alps may be the go-to for skiing, but the Pyrenees certainly hold their own when it comes to winter sports. Right in the heart of the Pierre Saint-Martin resort, in the quaint village of Arette, the chalet is ideally located for skiing, hiking – with trails leading up to the Pic d’Arlas or Pic d’Anie starting right at the doorstep – dog sledding, and enjoying the local shops, all without ever needing a car! The owners, attentive to their guests’ comfort, offer ski and hiking equipment directly at the chalet upon arrival.

Fancy a quick trip across the border? It’s just a 15-minute drive to Spain, to sample some local specialties, or explore new ski slopes and hiking trails. Stock up on sheep’s cheese and Spanish cured meats before heading back. Caroline suggests stopping at the locals’ favorite, Mum’s Bar, for a coffee before hitting the slopes. Whether in summer or winter, Chalet Melzerata offers a fantastic retreat!
