"Here, you’re gently lulled by the ebb and flow of the waves, and enjoy direct access to the beach for moments of true serenity."

Set on the Nau beach in Le Pouliguen, life at Ker Gonan – which means ‘The Great Burrow’ in Breton – feels like being on a boat. The stunning, classic Breton stone property spread over two floors. As part of the Maison Estran collection, collection, known for its exceptional coastal homes, Ker Gonan welcomes up to height guests with a host of thoughtful services for a truly unforgettable vacation. After their success with Il Polpo Nero in Sardinia where Lola and her family brought new life to an architect-designed house amidst a lush Mediterranean garden, it’s Atlantic Coast’s charm that now takes center stage.

On the ground floor, guests can roam freely between the living room, the fully equipped kitchen, the charming “cabinet of curiosities,” the garden, and the beach—within a few steps. The first floor features a music area for enthusiasts – pianists will enjoy playing on a grand piano with a view of the sea, a well-stocked library, and a spacious master suite with a terrace offering breathtaking sea views. On the second and top floor, you’ll find three bedrooms, each with its own bathroom. A true haven for family and friends, perfect for gathering every vacation, enjoying long afternoons on the beach, and sharing aperitif on the terrace.

The estran—the coastal stretch between the highest and lowest tides—is a space in constant flux, alternately submerged and revealed by the sea. This dynamic connection to the water serves as the inspiration behind Lola and her family’s properties.

Each home is intimately tied to the sea, both geographically and spiritually. “Our homes are never far from the water, and while they stand firmly on land, their connection to the ocean’s quiet depths goes far beyond interior design.” Here, creativity and serenity take center stage, with books, musical instruments, and objects that each tell their own story.

The Maison Estran experience is all about thoughtful details and guest well-being. “Honesty bar, Land Rover Defender available for rent to explore the (very beautiful) La Baule region, boat trips, visits to the salt marshes and local vineyards, or yoga sessions with ocean views—whatever you wish for, just ask, and you’ll be pampered!

"At high tide, the sea ventures right up to the house walls, giving the feeling of being on a boat."

Transformation
of a Breton manor

Built in the 1930s, Ker Gonan was once part of the estate surrounding the Manoir de Kursac, located at the beginning of Pointe de Penchâteau. When the owners sold this outbuilding in 2020, Lola and her family were quick to make it their own.

The renovation was a labor of love for the new owners. Gone are the gray plaster walls and PVC windows, with only the original stone walls and staircase preserved. After three years of work, this Breton manor was completely transformed. “We worked with talented craftsmen and architects for the major structural changes, but the vision and style were entirely ours,” explains Lola. Drawing inspiration from their travels and personal stories, the goal was to preserve the essence of the original property while creating a one-of-a-kind family retreat. Mission accomplished.

The garden, once a simple parking lot, has also been restored to its former glory. A haven of greenery (helped along by the occasional Breton drizzle), an outdoor shower perfect for after the beach, and a terrace that connects with the kitchen.

A carefully curated
decor

Charming decorative pieces in every nook and cranny.

Charming decorative pieces in every nook and cranny.

To furnish and decorate Ker Gonan, Lola and her family sought inspiration from beyond Brittany. “Ker Gonan blends the cozy warmth of English interiors with a modern, rustic style. Each room tells a story through carefully chosen objects and handcrafted pieces, with subtle nods to the sea—all done with understated elegance.”

In the dining room, a beautiful custom-made wooden table—crafted by a friend who is a cabinetmaker, offering his interpretation of a table somewhere between a longboard and a boat hull—pairs perfectly with vintage chairs by Albert Jacob. An impressive bookshelf stands nearby, inviting you to pick up a book or admire the small treasures lovingly placed by the owners.

With its cozy, cottage-like atmosphere—complete with a fireplace, soft sofas and armchairs, warm tones, weathered wood, and gentle lighting—Ker Gonan is the perfect retreat. Even on rainy days, it’s hard not to feel content. Just throw on your striped shirt and raincoat, and let Ker Gonan work its charm!
