"Every day, we watch the landscape shift with the ebb and flow of the tides."
Just steps from the Gujan harbor, nestled along a bayou and at the foot of the coastal path, La Cabane des Barbots Bleus perfectly captures the relaxed lifestyle of Arcachon Bay. This charming wooden house, adorned with blue shutters, is an ideal retreat for a family or group of friends, located just five minutes from the beaches and oyster huts. With two double bedrooms and a dormitory (spacious by cabin standards), it comfortably accommodates up to eight guests.
The highlight? A sprawling 100 m² garden-terrace where you can embrace the rhythm of the tides, start your day with a sunrise yoga session (a mat is provided), or enjoy breakfast accompanied by the sound of seagulls and the gentle lapping of the water. It’s the perfect holiday home for exploring the best of Arcachon Bay while savoring the sea at any time of day.
A stylish
cabin
A meal with a view at the cabin.
Built in 2005, La Cabane des Barbots Bleus draws inspiration from the traditional oyster cabins, once reserved for professional use. With its natural wood cladding, colorful shutters that open upwards in a Tahitian style, and large windows, the house blends harmoniously into the Arcachon Bay landscape.
In 2021, Margaux and her young family from Bordeaux became its proud owners. Since the building is relatively new and crafted with high-quality materials—special mention to the beautiful solid oak flooring—they opted not to undertake major renovations. Instead, they focused on reimagining the interiors and adding a large bay window overlooking the port, offering a panoramic view of the surroundings. “This window is like a living painting, with the landscape constantly shifting with the tides and weather. You can easily spend hours working, reading, or dining at the table in front of this ever-changing spectacle,” says Margaux.

After founding her own decoration and jewelry business, Margaux partnered with her cousin to create the interior design agency Paturel. With a keen eye for art, materials, and a deep appreciation for vintage finds, Margaux credits her grandmother for inspiring her love of objects and craftsmanship. Originally from Tahiti, her grandmother owned a shop specializing in pottery, tableware, decoration, and jewelry. This influence is palpable in the cabin’s ambiance, which subtly evokes the feel of a “house of the islands,” with vernacular objects, solid wood, raw materials, and traditional fabrics. The pièce de résistance? A lagoon painting by Jean Masson, an artist who lived in Tahiti during the 1950s—the same era as Margaux’s grandparents.
“The decor doesn’t fit into any specific category, and to me, that’s the essence of an interior design project,” Margaux explains. “This house is filled with family heirlooms and treasures from our flea market outings, which give it warmth and a true sense of identity. We focused on playing with materials and textures, adding touches of color through accessories like bed linens and cushions,” she adds.

Holidays
at Gujan-Mestras
The best tip? Get oysters delivered straight to your door.
Guests at La Cabane des Barbots Bleus can enjoy a variety of activities: boat trips in a pinasse (a traditional local boat) on the waters of the Bassin, walks along the coastal path or through the pine forests, or simply relaxing moments on the terrace. The house also serves as an ideal base for exploring the region’s rich gastronomic and cultural heritage, including excellent oyster cabins—Margaux is always happy to share her top recommendations.
For an extra charge, guests can hire a private chef, have oysters delivered, or rent mountain bikes to explore the area. Another option is to visit one of the nearby villages: Arcachon and the Dune of Pilat are both just 20 minutes away by car. Stroll through the market, savor a seafood platter by the Bassin, nap on the beach, or even try surfing the Atlantic waves. Cabin getaways are winning us over!
