At the foot of Gordes, one of the most beautiful villages of South of France, the Domaine des Milles Roches is home to a unique private house and two independent rooms where Provencal poetry and the gentle way of life come together.

"Living among stones and olive trees."

Gazing through the region’s symbolic cypress trees, Les Milles Roches stands proudly on a 1.5-hectare estate, a paradise for lovers of nature and authenticity. Olive groves and vineyards surround this secluded house and offer breathtaking views of the Provencal countryside. It houses 6 beds, including two bedrooms with en-suite shower rooms and an attic bedroom with its own shower room on a lower level. The living areas lie in a single 60 m2 volume, with an open-plan kitchen that opens directly onto a terrace. Like a peninsula next to the pond, this terrace extends the living space naturally. Here, you can watch the sun illuminate the stone houses of Gordes in the morning and bathe the ochre village of Roussillon in the evening light. Although central to the estate, the home, nestled among olive trees to the west and vineyards to the east, enjoys a private, unobstructed southern exposure.

Natalie and Michel, originally from the Paris region, decided to embark on a new life project: a wine estate. Their goal was to find a home close to Paris so their children could visit them easily. As avid cycling enthusiasts, they saw the Luberon region, with its iconic Mont Ventoux, as the ideal place for their passion. After several months of searching, they discovered this former workshop, abandoned for over ten years.

The tale of Les Milles Roches dates back to 1969 when Flemish painter Pol Mara and his wife Maria chose this spot to build their home. They created a modern architectural masterpiece while honoring the regional codes, particularly the use of dry stone. The couple’s life and energy infused the house for many years. However, following Pol Mara’s death in 1998, the house slowly fell into disuse. Natalie and Michel Rochereau then took on the mission of reawakening the spirit of Les Milles Roches, breathing new life into its dormant stones and lush vegetation.

A single word : Serenity.

The exterior has been preserved to maintain the original dry-stone architecture and restanques typical of the region. Inside, Natalie and Michel have skillfully blended history with contemporary elegance. Each bedroom features an Italian-style shower room, combining functionality and aesthetics. The bright, spacious living room opens onto a terrace adorned with historic stones from the former summer kitchen. The building was renovated in keeping with Pol Mara’s “open-plan living” concept. The elements retained in the restoration reflect the artist’s avant-garde spirit. The child-friendly estate is ideal for families looking to recharge their batteries. A bicycle rental service is available for exploring the surrounding area. Natalie and Michel are always ready to share their gastronomic tips or point the way to the most beautiful hidden village. More than hosts, they are ambassadors for their region.
