"The country house embodies the transition between the past—the history of a Provençal family—and the present."

Since its construction in 1850, this country house has always remained within the same family, Mireille’s. Passed down through generations, it was finally acquired by Bérengère in 2022. Honoring the home’s rich history, the new owner embarked on a thoughtful renovation, transforming it into Bastide Mirèio. The name is a tribute to Mireio, a famous poem by Frédéric Mistral, with “Mireio” meaning “Mireille” in Provençal.

Located in Fontvieille, the village immortalized by Alphonse Daudet’s Letters from My Windmill, this house perfectly embodies the Provençal spirit. With space to accommodate up to 18 guests—14 adults and 4 children—the 450 m² bastide boasts five en-suite bedrooms with walk-in closets, a family suite, and a dormitory. Thoughtfully renovated, it offers all the essentials for a perfect holiday: a pool, terraces, gym, children’s playroom, and even a pétanque court. All that’s left to do is unwind and embrace the relaxed pace of the South!

To ease the transition from past to present, Bérengère carefully preserved the defining charm of the century-old bastide, starting with its iconic facade! Inside, the once small and compartmentalized rooms have been opened up into larger, sunlit spaces—except for the upper floors, where the small, traditional windows help keep the bedrooms cool.

In keeping with the building’s original construction, which used stone from the Fontvieille quarry, reclaimed materials—like cement tiles, terracotta, chevron bejmat, and patinated floorboards—were used in the renovation. Hidden under old carpets were beautiful antique tiles, which sadly had to be replaced with “new” old tiles due to their condition. “The goal was to maintain the character of an old Provençal farmhouse while modernizing it for comfort.”

From Hong Kong
to Fontvieille

Inside, the design and decor reveal a blend of inspirations. Mediterranean influences—highlighted through its materials and colors—meet the wabi-sabi philosophy—that embraces the beauty of imperfection as seen in the restored furniture—, creating a space that feels both serene and balanced.

Bérengère has curated a mix of Asian pieces—collected during her time in Hong Kong and Dubai—paired with unique objects and lighting found at flea markets. Among the restored treasures are drapers’ tables, travertine bedside tables from Oman, and a monastery table. This joyful fusion of styles results in a home that feels both distinctive and harmonious, where every piece tells a story.

Ideally located in the heart of Fontvieille, Bastide Mirèio offers the perfect starting point for a leisurely stroll to pick up fresh bread, cycle through the village, visit the Provençal market, or fill your basket with local delights like tapenade, fougasse, and goat cheese. “The village is renowned for its preserved charm and authenticity,” Bérengère notes, proud of her background as a former restaurateur who loves to welcome her guests with a personal touch, ensuring they feel right at home.

For those eager to explore, the surrounding area offers endless possibilities: Avignon and its famous festival are just 30 minutes away, the culturally vibrant Arles is 20 minutes by car, and the stunning Les Baux-de-Provence—one of the Most Beautiful Villages in France—is only a ten-minute drive. The perfect setting for a quintessential Provençal escape!
