"Here, the atmosphere is very bucolic and soothing, with nothing but nature as far as the eye can see."

At the crossroads of Landes, the Basque Country, and Béarn, discover a peaceful retreat where nature takes center stage. Here, the only sounds are the birds singing and the Bidouze River flowing by the property. With such a bucolic landscape, you’d almost forget that Biarritz is just 40 minutes away!

The Domaine de l’Ermitage, once a barn and stables, now welcomes up to 15 guests and features expansive grounds, a saltwater pool, a jacuzzi, a soccer field, and a 400m² panoramic terrace. With so many amenities, boredom is not an option!

A stud farm
turned country house

Great horse-riding enthusiasts Agathe, originally from Béarn, and François fell in love with this estate, which consists of a barn and stables built in the 20th century. François, a longtime racehorse trainer, embarked on the restoration of the building with his wife. Soon, their family joined the project! Agathe’s sister, an interior decorator, her mother, who tended the garden and vegetable patch, her sister-in-law, a naturopath who helped develop wellness workshops, and their niece, who created the estate’s visual identity through her drawings and photographs, all contributed.

With such support, the work could begin! A team of 15 local workers and craftsmen came together to revamp the beautiful stone building. They preserved its original materials—particularly the wooden beams and framework—while strategically adding openings to showcase the panoramic views of the surrounding nature. The floors, featuring polished concrete, harmoniously blend with white walls and wood elements. This mix of styles and materials gives the property its unique identity.

Committed to preserving the environment during the estate’s restoration, Agathe and François applied the same philosophy when it came to furnishing it. Out with the hay bales, in with the large linen sofas around a repurposed antique door turned coffee table. Several original items were incorporated into the decor, like two horse stable doors transformed into headboards in one of the bedrooms. Their efforts, including optimized heating and water systems and the use of organic, local cosmetics, earned them the European Eco-Label in 2024.

Aesthetic and eco-friendly, the rest of the furniture was sourced from local antiques dealers. The abundant rattan and wood, along with the light, natural tones, echo the colors and materials of the surrounding nature. The ambiance of this country house, with all the modern comforts—hotel-quality bedding, a spacious and fully equipped kitchen—and beautifully raw, time-worn furniture, creates a delightful setting.

"The terrace is a true living space, overlooking the surrounding nature and offering stunning views of the hills and Landes meadows. The sunsets there are magnificent."

At the crossroads

When it comes to activities, the estate has it all! The old sand quarry, once used for exercising horses, is now a lively playground offering badminton, ping-pong, and soccer—perfect for spontaneous fun. Nearby, a pétanque court awaits those looking to practice their aim. For something different, try an aquabike session in the pool or meditate with yoga while taking in the stunning views.

Born in the region, Agathe has a contact list as thick as a phone book and knows all the best local artisans. Reach out to the concierge to book a cooking class, pottery workshop, cosmetic-making session, or even a horseback ride along the river. There’s always something to discover!

While you’ll find everything you need on-site—even a shop in one of the estate’s houses offering delightful local products, wines, and champagnes—the area is also worth exploring! Rent a bike and set off on an adventure: grab a quick bite at the Peyrehorade market, visit a kiwi orchard (a regional specialty), explore the Château de Bidache, or take a day trip to surf in Biarritz or Hossegor… The hardest part will be finding time to do it all!
