"The house is charming, bright, and fully renovated. It’s perfect for a family getaway, enjoying the pool, the basketball court, and the Fontainebleau Forest."

What makes La Maison Barbizon unique? Its classic country-home charm on the outside, revealing bright, minimalist, and refined interiors. Just 45 minutes from Paris, in the heart of Barbizon—a village famous for hosting many painters—it’s the perfect retreat for a weekend or a nature-filled stay with family or friends.

The house offers a welcoming kitchen with a central island, a cozy living room with a fireplace, and several spacious bedrooms, including a master suite with its own bathroom, two additional bedrooms, and an office with a double bed. Outside, a beautifully maintained garden, a heated pool, and extras like a ping-pong table and a street workout area add to the experience. The icing on the cake? The breathtaking Fontainebleau Forest is just a short walk away.

Let’s go to
Barbizon

The story of La Maison Barbizon began with a stroke of luck. In 2019, its owners, then living in Paris, were eager to escape the hustle and bustle of the capital and set out in search of land near the Fontainebleau Forest—once a royal hunting ground and now a beautifully preserved natural retreat.

Their search led them to what would soon become La Maison Barbizon—and it was love at first sight. Formerly home to the caretakers of a neighboring hotel, the charming 1800s building was in need of serious renovation. But that didn’t deter them. After just one virtual visit on an iPhone, they decided to make an offer. The rest, as they say, is history!

2.0 countryhome

Once the house was theirs, the owners embarked on an ambitious renovation, guided by architect Floriane Abello. Their goal? To preserve the home’s rustic charm on the outside while creating a sleek, modern interior. The result: rural on the outside, almost museum-like on the inside.

“I told the architect I wanted anything but the clichés of a country house—no terracotta tiles, no checkered throws, no faulty heaters, no bulky armoires, no drafts… Instead, I wanted comfort, warmth, and clean lines,” recalls the owner.

The renovation achieved the perfect balance between simplicity and comfort. The painted concrete floors and kitchen walls, deliberately left in their raw state, lend the home an industrial yet artistic feel.

The original oak staircase was carefully restored, while marble and stainless steel accents were seamlessly integrated throughout, particularly in the bathrooms and kitchen. Exposed beams and a stone wall were preserved to retain the home’s character, while modern elements introduced a fresh, contemporary touch.

The true showpiece? A striking raw metal wall that frames the fireplace, giving the living room its distinctive character.

The garden also underwent a stunning transformation, featuring a beautiful teak terrace inspired by the Bibliothèque Nationale de France. Nestled within it is a lush, almost jungle-like green space, bringing a touch of urban wilderness to the property.

Good taste,
right next door

The decor of La Maison Barbizon reflects the owners’ refined taste, effortlessly blending vintage charm with contemporary design. Both raw and elegant, the interior is thoughtfully curated with carefully selected pieces: Minotti sofas and iconic Togo armchairs in the living room, auction-sourced chairs from Drouot in the kitchen… Thoughtful details that infuse the space with history and authenticity.

The owner’s personal photography collection adorns the walls, adding a distinctive personal touch. Every element has been carefully considered to create a harmonious space where each object naturally finds its place.

Living
on Barbizon time

The village of Barbizon, with its rich artistic heritage, is the perfect setting for a countryside escape less than an hour from Paris. In the 1850s, it became a retreat for painters and artists drawn to the natural beauty of the Fontainebleau Forest.

Today, Barbizon has kept its timeless charm, with cobbled streets, characterful homes, and vibrant art galleries. Start the day with fresh pastries from the local bakery—just a ten-minute stroll from the house—before exploring the village, visiting the Musée de l’École de Barbizon, or venturing into the forest’s scenic trails, perfect for hiking, climbing, or cycling.

Of course, staying in is just as inviting, with a basement gym and hammam, a garden made for summer barbecues, and a pool perfect for lounging in the sun. One thing is certain—Barbizon is the ideal getaway.
