In Marseille, just a stone’s throw from the small Malmousque harbor, a charming fisherman’s cabin transformed into a cozy retreat for two guests. A little haven where you can soak in the village atmosphere and the nearby sea.

Here, you can immerse yourself in the neighborhood’s unique charm—whether sipping a drink at the quaint Malmousque harbor or lounging on the rocks at Maldormé—all while enjoying the ease of exploring entirely on foot.

Along the Mediterranean coast, old fishermen’s cabins are a familiar sight. These small white huts, perched right by the water or just steps away, were once the domain of fishermen but have since become coveted retreats for vacationers. In Malmousque, a picturesque neighborhood in Marseille, Marie—a buyer and curator for hotels—acquired one of these iconic cabins in 2023. According to local lore, the cabin once served as both a restaurant and a photo studio, adding to its unique charm and storied past.

Now, this charming 30 m² retreat accommodates two guests (or up to four, with two children on the living room sofa) for an immersive Marseille experience by the sea. The ground floor and upper level showcase a harmonious blend of Mediterranean and Provençal style. Staying in this cabin means embracing the vibrant atmosphere of Malmousque, just a short walk from the beach.

To renovate her beloved cabin—starting with the removal of the plastic coverings that once hid its character—Marie revealed the charm of the South in every detail. On the ground floor, she laid vintage mallons de couvert—traditional terracotta tiles from southern France—while upstairs, she opted for sea grass flooring, evoking the feel of summer getaways. The walls were finished with a white limewash, a nod to the iconic coastal homes of the Mediterranean.

Drawing on her expertise in sourcing vintage treasures, Marie curated an eclectic mix of design pieces: tableware from Provence, Italian candlesticks, and standout contemporary accents like a straw-seated chair by Pierre Gautier-Delaye, a shell-shaped sconce by André Cazenave, and woven mirrors by Audoux Minet. Every corner reveals a thoughtful touch, with carefully selected objects that invite admiration.

Vacation,
cabin-style

Marie’s idea of a perfect vacation? “Embracing the unique vibe of Malmousque—sipping a beer at the little harbor or on the rocks at Maldormé, walking everywhere, grabbing lunch at Cécile Food Club, having coffee at Boujou or Bar de la Grande Terrasse, enjoying a pizza at L’Eau à la Bouche, visiting Galerie Pentcheff, and taking a swim at Maldormé…”

After a full day, you can set up a small table in the alley beside the cabin, sip a pastis, and watch as beachgoers slowly drift away. The calm that follows is a welcome contrast to the lively rhythm of holiday life. Another great plan? A picnic with a view of the sunset, followed by a midnight swim.
