"Guests staying at Maison Salix particularly appreciate the spacious rooms, which create a wonderfully open and airy feel."

In Vallabrègues, a charming Provençal village along the Rhône between Avignon and Arles, three friends from Ghent, Belgium—Vincent, Kurt, and Hugues—came together to purchase an old building and bring it back to life as Maison Salix. This historic home, with foundations from the 14th century and additions from the 17th and 18th centuries, once belonged to an aristocratic family, passed down through generations before they sold it a few years ago. The next owner, an Englishman, cherished the home but eventually decided to part with it, making way for its new chapter.

Vincent, Kurt, and Hugues, already experienced in renovating apartments in Portugal, were immediately captivated by the heritage of this property. They carefully preserved as many original materials as possible while transforming it into a comfortable, well-equipped holiday home for up to 22 guests, spread across six suites. The expansive inner courtyard, with a pool and lush Provençal plants, provides a refreshing retreat under the southern sun. The highlight? An array of hotel services—coaching, room service, breakfast, concierge—that elevate the guest experience. Let’s take a closer look at this beautiful property!

A house
of art and history

Before it became Maison Salix, this property was in the hands of a noble Provençal family for over five centuries. Originally built as a tower, it expanded significantly during the 17th and 18th centuries, now reaching an impressive 1,180 square meters. Its more modern façade, however, dates back to the 18th century, and it’s rumored in the village that part of the estate once served as a girls’ school.

As the family’s fortunes declined, they sold the property in the early 2010s to a British gentleman with a passion for historic architecture. He carried out a major renovation, preserving the building’s original spaces and materials. After ten years, Vincent, Kurt, and Hugues became the new owners, adding their personal touch: the stone floors and walls, centuries-old fireplaces and doors, high ceilings, and grand wooden beams were carefully preserved, while high-end comforts were added, including Trekka bedding and Rivolta Carmignani linens.

Renaming it Maison Salix, they paid homage to the village’s history of crafting wicker goods, as “salix” means “willow” in Latin—a nod to the weaving connections they hope to inspire here.

A transformation
by a trio

To bring Maison Salix into the modern age, the three owners dedicated six months to renovations: they reinforced the structure, added insulation, constructed a swimming pool, created 11 bathrooms and a gym, installed air conditioning, and redesigned the garden.

Once these structural updates were complete, they focused on furnishing the expansive rooms. Drawing from their interior design experience, they combined their distinct styles to make Maison Salix truly special. “Hugues has a passion and a true talent for interior design,” Kurt notes. The result? Interiors that are just as stunning as the exteriors—a seamless blend of furnishings left by the previous owner, contemporary artworks from their personal collections, and unique pieces sourced from Belgium and Portugal, all coming together to form a sophisticated, harmonious look.

They also gave particular attention to the lighting, crafting a warm ambiance in the evening. By day, natural sunlight floods the open spaces, offering a refreshing contrast to traditional Provençal architecture.

At the crossroads

Maison Salix is ideally situated for a journey through Provence’s rich landscapes and culture. “Vallabrègues is a peaceful village,” say the owners. “It’s not just a stopover; it’s a destination in itself, where life flows at a relaxed pace, only 20 minutes from Nîmes and Avignon.” Here, visitors can dive into the local heritage of basket weaving, celebrated each August with a dedicated festival, or enjoy the charm of the historic center, shaded terraces, and a traditional Provençal market.

Situated along the Rhône, Vallabrègues offers scenic views and the gentle coolness of the river. From here, paths lead in every direction: Avignon to the north, Arles to the south, Nîmes to the east, and the postcard-perfect villages of Saint-Rémy-de-Provence and Gordes to the west. It’s a place you’ll want to return to, as there’s always more to discover in Provence!
