"It’s quite a majestic house. You walk through the large door and arrive in the beautiful, peaceful courtyard."
In 2020, with international travel off the table, Julien and Chloé rediscovered the joys of vacationing in France. The couple—she an architect, he an entrepreneur—felt drawn to countryside living when they stumbled upon this farmhouse. Set on a quaint square in Saint-Pons-la-Calm, the building sits on the village’s ramparts, with foundations dating back to the 13th century. Its rich history, stone walls, and enchanting patio immediately captured their hearts. With their two daughters, Maëva and Stella (who inspired the name Ëvalla), they envisioned transforming the property into the perfect holiday home through a thoughtful renovation
After four years of renovation, Mas Ëvalla has come to life. Designed to host ten guests, this charming property boasts multiple terraces, a picturesque courtyard, and a basin that provides a refreshing escape when the Gard sun is at its peak. Guests can find privacy in one of the four bedrooms, each with its own bathroom, before coming together on a terrace for conversation. Welcome to a vibrant and joyful family retreat!
A village house
The vaulted ceiling that seems to have always been there.
Before it became Mas Ëvalla, this building, located near the village castle and church, served as the local bakery and butcher shop in the 17th century. Its distinctive ‘U’ shape was designed to give the residents of Saint-Pons-la-Calm access to the village washhouse, which still stands today and can be visited.
While the butchers and laundresses are long gone, vacationers now flock to this beautifully restored farmhouse, thanks to Chloé and Julien’s careful renovation. ‘We worked with local artisans to strip the house back and removed all the false ceilings to create more spacious areas.’
They also made ‘small’ additions: the vaulted ceiling overlooking the courtyard was built using stones from one of the building’s original walls, and the pool was integrated into what used to be the old fountain. Designed as a basin, this concrete water feature blends seamlessly with the surrounding stone, giving the impression it has always been there. The result? A perfect balance of contemporary design and traditional charm.
"We added a panoramic opening to enjoy the incredible view at sunrise. It’s a true space for contemplation."
A palette
in homage to the South
In this Provençal gem crafted from local stone, Chloé initially envisioned soft, neutral shades to complement the building. However, she soon found those tones a bit too understated for her taste. Enter Klein blue, a vibrant nod to the Mediterranean (just over an hour’s drive away), which now punctuates several rooms—appearing as furniture, wall accents, or even in a striking piece by artist Yann Masseyeff that commands attention in the living room.
This bold blue is paired with aquamarine, yellow, and terracotta, serving as the true unifying colors of Mas Ëvalla. The result? A lively, colorful home that captures the vibrant essence of the South. Additional touches pay tribute to the Provençal lifestyle: photographs of Marseille in the living room, and vintage furniture sourced from the region. It’s a space that truly embodies the spirit of vacation.
Klein blue and terracotta set the tone.
