"When staying here, our guests often say they lose track of where they are and what time it is."
In the small village of Sainte-Colombe-la-Commanderie, in the Eure region, Alison and Jason brought their dream ryokan to life—a luxurious, traditional Japanese inn crafted for relaxation, meditation, and yoga. What began as a sketch in 2018 has evolved into a breathtakingly beautiful and extraordinary building, blending modern design with its bucolic surroundings. Before reaching this milestone, the young owners spent two years traveling the world for inspiration—from Norway to Nepal, and, naturally, Japan.
Once they found the perfect plot in the Normandy countryside, the long and arduous work could begin: Alison and Jason were determined to create a home that reflected their personalities—both unique and eco-conscious. By 2024, Namō Ryokan was born. The result? A serene haven where up to 24 guests can disconnect and unwind, in a house that effortlessly invites relaxation with its earthy tones, raw materials, and outdoor sauna. Guests can enjoy yoga sessions, gong baths, and the exquisite cuisine prepared by a private chef. It’s the kind of place that, as soon as you leave, you’re already dreaming of returning.

A home
in harmony with nature
Alison and Jason don’t do things like everyone else. As a pattern maker and photojournalist, their boundless creativity is evident at Namō Ryokan. They designed an energy self-sufficient building, using straw, wood, and cork for the walls, a roof insulated with old newspapers, recycled glass foundations, and partitions made from local linen panels and recycled jeans.
“Once we had a well-sealed structure, we positioned large windows facing south. This way, the winter sun heats the raw concrete floors, which act as natural heat batteries, gradually releasing warmth during cooler periods or at night.” In the summer, the extended roof helps keep the heat at bay, and the angle of the sun prevents overheating.
But that’s just the beginning! Rainwater supplies the toilets, washing machine, and irrigation system, filtering through a plant-filled area where the plants feed on organic waste, returning clean water to nature.
“In short, it’s a building we’re proud of.” Namō Ryokan is truly inspiring, paving the way for innovative, sustainable living!
Thanks to the large windows, life at Namō Ryokan seamlessly blends indoor and outdoor living.
A true
sanctuary
Inside Namō Ryokan, soft, light hues, raw materials, and minimalist decor create a deep sense of serenity. The house exudes a distinctly Japanese ambiance, embracing the wabi-sabi philosophy—finding beauty in imperfection. Simple elegance is reflected in natural tones from earthen and clay finishes, while the design emphasizes the gentle play of external light, bringing the outdoors in and enhancing the peaceful, meditative atmosphere.
As for the furnishings, some pieces are homemade, crafted by Jason using wood sourced from their own garden, while others have been carefully selected from local artisans in Normandy, including the tableware and stoneware vases. This thoughtful blend creates a perfect harmony between Japanese inspiration and the Normandy landscape, resulting in a beautifully cohesive and serene environment.

A temple
of relaxation
Japanese tea as a welcome gesture.
Much like a traditional Japanese ryokan, Namō Ryokan offers an environment designed for tranquility and meditation. Upon arrival, guests are welcomed with Japanese tea, setting the tone for a (very) peaceful stay. Days here are marked by yoga sessions (regular retreats are held), nature walks, and moments of contemplation or relaxation in the sauna, nestled in the serene Japanese garden.
As evening falls, the day’s activities work up an appetite, and guests savor vegetarian dishes crafted by the private chef, who trained under Hélène Darroze. Afterwards, Jason leads a gong bath—a deeply immersive sound experience—before everyone gathers around the fire pit to gaze at the stars. If relaxation had a definition, it would surely be Namō Ryokan.
