"A clean, refined, and modern style; a mix of statement pieces and charming finds from antique shops or flea markets."
Following their successful venture in the Cévennes, Michel Mulder and Sofie Sleumer are introducing a new gem to their collection, Les Maisons de L’Heure Vide: Rue du Four. Situated close to its predecessor, Mas Les Vignes, but on the Gard side, this former silk farm resides in the village of Berrias-et-Casteljeau, on the Ardèche side. Secluded from neighboring houses, the property is organized around an internal courtyard that features several striking elements: a heated swimming pool, garden tables nestled under the shade of an ancient fig tree, and a selection of meticulously chosen terracotta pots. The enchantment begins from the moment one steps into the courtyard, signaling the start of an extraordinary visit.
A unique place to live in
The living spaces on the first floor consist of a bright living room opening onto the large kitchen and, even better, onto a beautiful 20m2 terrace with a view of the castle and the church of Berrias. An open space, conducive to conviviality, where the kitchen takes center stage. In fact, as passionate curators of good products (and beautiful things!), Sofie and Michel have put together a small grocery-wine-cellar-boutique on the ground floor. A true treasure trove: natural wines, coffee beans, seasonal grocery items, Japanese knives, Khasto baby pajamas (matching the brand’s home linens), ceramics, and art pieces!
Rustic elegance
– with a touch of design
Farmhouse table and designer chairs
What characterizes Les Maisons de l’Heure Vide is Michel and Sofie’s passion for beautiful buildings and their preservation. They undertake renovations to enhance comfort and personally work on finishes to impart a signature decor.
Their craftsmanship is evident as you explore the three levels of this charming old house, with its lime-coated walls, large master-house-style windows, and vaulted ceilings. The floors feature antique terracotta tiles, as well as stunning hexagonal tiles and Marazzi cement tiles (similar to those at Mas).
The minimalist yet warm style reveals sleek design pieces and more! Among the carefully selected timeless furniture is the Kiki Sofa by Ilmari Tapiovaara, as well as sofas and poufs from Sancal. In the kitchen, Jean Prouvé’s Standard Chairs surround a large farmhouse table discovered in a flea market. A mix of flea market finds and designer creations add an extra touch of soul to this historic house, all in understated elegance.
Tranquil Happiness Street
Rue du Four epitomizes relaxation and comfort throughout all seasons. Whether it’s snuggling up with a book under a cozy blanket in autumn or lounging on an outdoor bed by the pool in summer, the setting is always serene, the rooms filled with light, and the ambiance so peaceful that one could happily spend their entire stay within its confines. Well, almost! The house also serves as an ideal base to discover the wonders of southern Ardèche, including the Gorges de Chassezac, with trails that begin right at your doorstep. For an added delight to your stay, floral decoration workshops offered by Atelier Prairies come highly recommended, bringing an extra layer of charm and tranquility to your experience.
