"The villa is sheltered from the wind behind the dunes, yet close enough to the sea spray to smell and hear the ocean, and the cicadas!"
In Lacanau, Villa Echynops—named after the unique local flowers that resemble blue sea urchins—is the perfect family home. Built in 1920, it is one of the iconic villas of the coast, offering a true journey back in time while providing modern comforts. Owned by the same Canaulaise family since its inception, the 160m² villa is an architectural gem where you can enjoy relaxing in the 600m² garden, strolling to the nearby beach, cycling, reading in one of the verandas, or taking advantage of the concierge services. Simply put, it’s the ideal spot for a delightful vacation!
A true local gem
You can recognize the villas lining the Atlantic coast among all others: asymmetrical, inspired by Moorish, Colonial, Neoclassical, and Neo-Gothic styles, with wide-eaved roofs adorned with intricate bargeboards, and verandas—this villa has two! Villa Echynops is no exception to the rule. A pioneer, it was one of the first villas built by the sea at the beginning of the 20th century when Lacanau became a popular seaside resort for the bourgeoisie. Through the ages, it has managed to retain all its elegance and charm.
With high ceilings yet relatively small cubic rooms, Villa Echynops creates cozy nooks that are also very bright, thanks to the large windows that elongate the building. Whether in summer or winter, these spaces are highly appreciated for their conviviality!
Welcome to Villa Echynops !

Villa Echynops
The perfect spot to read quietly by the fire.
In the same family for over a century, the villa has almost become a family member itself! Very attached to the building and noticing it was falling into disrepair, the owners decided to give it a second lease on life while preserving its exceptional period architecture. Modernization work was undertaken, including insulation and custom-made carpentry that respected the original forms. The renovation is almost invisible in terms of aesthetics, as the old cement tiles, ornamental woods, and Venetian blinds have been carefully preserved.
“The house is period, so its decoration shouldn’t lean towards extreme modernity”, summarizes Louise, one of the happy owners of the villa. A few design elements add character to the rooms passed down through generations. A blend of period features and more contemporary styles adds a touch of charm, giving the villa its unique character. This family jewel is clearly cherished and loved by its owners, much to the delight of vacationers!
"Renovating an old house is an absolute art, requiring particular craftsmanship, keen observation, and attentive listening. It's an ode to the work of yesteryear, to the history of the place, and to its past occupants."
Sea ahoy!
The major asset of Villa Echynops is its proximity to the ocean! At the end of the large garden, a small sandy path leads to the North beach in just a few minutes. Whether with a surfboard, a book, or a picnic basket in hand, everyone gathers there. After a beach session, an outdoor shower provides a refreshing break before heading out to explore Lacanau with the six bicycles available.
Another equally delightful option: preparing dinner in the kitchen-veranda before a grand summer barbecue. Depending on the weather, the evening might end with stargazing or a midnight swim. If the weather isn’t favorable, it’s a night for reading or board games near the stove in the South veranda. With its huge windows, you can enjoy the outdoors while staying cozy indoors. This is what we love about Villa Echynops: the indoor-outdoor lifestyle that can be enjoyed throughout the year!
We read in the sun in the garden before taking a dip in the ocean.
