"The sea is just below the villa, making it perfect for an early morning swim."
Captivated by the charm of a friend’s villa, the actual owner set his heart on finding his own property in Malmousque, a picturesque Marseille neighborhood nestled along the Corniche Kennedy. In 2023, he found what would become Villa Mosca—‘mosca’ meaning ‘fly’ in Provençal, with Anse de Malmousque translating to ‘bad fly’ in old Marseille dialect. After over a year of renovations, the 250 m² villa has been beautifully transformed.
Designed to host up to ten guests—with five bedrooms and four bathrooms—this remarkable villa combines the elegance of a contemporary art museum with the comforts of a seaside retreat. Architecture enthusiasts will feel right at home here. The highlight? Direct access to Malmousque’s port beach, sweeping views of the Mediterranean, and expansive terraces—including a rooftop—ideal for soaking up the sun while admiring Marseille’s breathtaking beauty.
Transformation
of a Marseille Villa
The summer lounge: a perfect spot to soak up the sun and admire the view.
Built in the 1970s, Villa Mosca has undergone a stunning transformation under the vision of Pierre-Antoine Bonamour, founder of the PAB Architecture studio. Stripping the house back to its bare bones, the architect redesigned everything, inviting sunlight and sea views into the space by enlarging the openings. Some windows, shaped like portholes, adorn the walls, framing the landscape like living artwork. The result? A feeling of living on a boat.
As for materials, the architect opted for a raw and minimalist approach: white walls, polished concrete in most rooms, and terracotta tiles—a nod to Provence?—featured on one of the terraces, in the kitchen, and part of the living room.
An interior design
crafted by Marion Mailaender
To furnish the interiors of Villa Mosca, the owner turned to the exceptionally talented interior designer Marion Mailaender, renowned for her work at the Tuba Club and La Marine des Goudes—two iconic Marseille landmarks.
Marion scoured the region, particularly Arles and L’Isle-sur-la-Sorgue, a haven for antique enthusiasts, uncovering treasures like armchairs, a summer lounge, and even a sofa sourced from the Netherlands. She brought a Mediterranean-inspired, colorful, and minimalist aesthetic to the villa. The owner also contributed his touch to the home’s decor. As the owner of a contemporary art gallery in Paris, he has an impeccable eye for art, curating pieces throughout the villa that art enthusiasts will delight in discovering.

Vacations
in Malmousque
From the "porthole," one can admire both Marseille and the sea.
Hidden away on a quiet street in the port of Malmousque, Villa Mosca embraces the rhythm of the cove, where locals and vacationers gather on the rocks as the warm weather returns. With the beach just steps away, mornings are often spent hurrying down to savor the tranquil shore.
The rest of the day unfolds leisurely, exploring the best neighborhoods in Marseille or trying out the owner’s recommended spots: the Cécile Food Club coffee shop-canteen, the Michelin three-star restaurant Le Petit Nice perched on the Corniche Kennedy, the charming Vallon des Auffres for a stroll, or the Alexis Pentcheff Art Gallery right across from the house. And always keeping an eye on the time—you wouldn’t want to miss the sunset over the Frioul Islands from the terrace of Villa Mosca.
