In San Vito dei Normanni, Sara and Luca designed two contemporary white buildings around a traditional “lamia,” accommodating seven guests. A harmonious blend of styles at the heart of the Apulian countryside.

“We had guests who, inspired by their stay at Casanguilla, asked us to design their own home in Puglia.”

Sara and Luca, a creative duo—he an architect, she an interior designer—founded Studio Anguilla and discovered Casanguilla while searching for a tranquil space to fuel their creativity. When they stumbled upon this lamia, originally used for storing olive grove tools, they immediately recognized its potential. Captivated by its character, they built their project around the historic structure, transforming it into a unique retreat flanked by two new contemporary buildings.

Their vision moved away from the traditional Puglian rural house, opting for a minimalist and modern space while staying true to local construction techniques and materials. The result is a perfect reflection of their talent: three buildings in harmony with the natural surroundings, offering a peaceful escape for up to seven guests in one of Italy’s most sought-after vacation regions. Thoughtful architecture allows guests to enjoy both privacy in separate homes and shared moments in communal spaces, such as the Mediterranean garden, orchards, pool, and expansive terrace.

As we know, Italy is full of beautiful buildings, and in Puglia, it’s the *lamie* that attract enthusiasts of historic architecture. These traditional structures, originally used for agricultural purposes, are built from local dry stone. Their roofs are vaulted, sometimes covered with terracotta tiles. When the roof takes the shape of a cone, it’s known as a *trullo*, a distinctive hallmark of the region. The thick walls and small openings help protect against the sun, and the exterior often blends seamlessly with the rural landscape.

Sara and Luca drew inspiration from these features to create a new chapter for the estate. “We adhered to local construction techniques, using materials such as tuff bricks and lime, while emphasizing the purity of lines and a minimalist approach.” The result is a design that perfectly complements the surrounding nature, creating a captivating and harmonious space.

Slow life in Puglia

Inside, minimalism reigns supreme, creating a profound sense of serenity that is especially appreciated during a vacation. “The sleek design and essential elements create a perfect blend of simplicity and tranquility that embodies the essence of slow living.”

Throughout the space, custom furniture, travel souvenirs—such as a rug brought back from Mauritania—and locally crafted items reflect the owners’ distinct personality. In the three buildings, natural wood and light, earthy tones echo the colors of the surrounding landscape. What also stands out is the abundance of light, present everywhere thanks to large windows and verandas that frame the lush garden. Another highlight? The house is powered entirely by the Apulian sun. It’s a flawless achievement!

Nature
at the heart of the home

To reach Casanguilla, you follow a picturesque path lined with maritime pines and cypress trees. On the expansive 18,000m² estate, olive trees and fruit trees thrive. To prepare a local ricotta, fig, and almond cake in the summer kitchen, you only need to reach out and gather fresh ingredients. But the tour doesn’t end there! A splendid Mediterranean garden surrounds the house, including a section dedicated to local medicinal herbs—perfect for enjoying herbal tea while stargazing.

“It’s a serene escape where minimalist design meets the timeless beauty of Puglia’s nature,” as Sara puts it. This tranquil retreat—where the vacation agenda mainly consists of lounging by the pool or wandering through the orchards—is just a 30-minute drive from the port city of Brindisi. The ancient city is worth a visit for its architecture and unique atmosphere. It’s the good life, Puglia style.
