Dive into History

Lucien Gassier’s deep admiration for Indochina is reflected in the castle’s unique design, echoing the revered structure of a Buddhist pagoda. The turquoise faience embellishing its corners and the three dragons adorning the rooftop terrace, originally brought from Indochina in the late 19th century, testify to Gassier’s profound connection with the region. The painted ceiling in the main salon narrates the building’s unique history, further embodying Gassier’s distinct bond with Indochina and giving the castle its distinctive character.

The estate surrounding the castle, once encompassing the entire Mar Vivo district until 1944, stretching down to the Sablettes beach below, suffered fragmentation during the war, leaving visible traces of bunkers where the vast gardens once thrived. Lucien Gassier’s architectural prowess extends beyond the Château de Mar Vivo; he also masterfully crafted the Water Division Pavilion at Chutes-Lavie in Marseille, now revered as a historical monument.
