"In the gardens, we planted jasmine, lavender, roses, and rosemary. This way, there's always a scent that evokes Italy."
In Italy, the term ‘casetta,’ a diminutive of ‘casa,’ evokes the image of a small, cozy, and welcoming home nestled in the heart of a medieval town. La Casetta in Collazzone, a charming stone house spanning three floors and dating back to at least the 1800s, was born alongside this small Umbrian village. Once home to multiple families, it has since been fully renovated into a 100m² residence, perfect for a group of four.
Outfitted with high-quality linens, custom-made beds, and bathrooms with heated floors, it’s an ideal retreat for a holiday in Umbria, near the valley where the Tiber River flows. The pièce de résistance? The terraces, lush gardens, and a pool with panoramic views of the surrounding nature. According to its delighted owners, life here is molto dolce. The only way to know is to come and experience it for yourself!
Inspired by
the mid-1800s and mid-60s
Eileen and her husband, the owners of La Casetta, know the area like the back of their hand. No wonder—they’ve been living in this Umbrian village for over 20 years. Back then, they discovered a ruined villa surrounded by olive trees and pines, which they transformed into their farm, La Segreta, where they now produce excellent olive oil, with the olives pressed within 24 hours of being handpicked.
Falling in love with Collazzone, they didn’t hesitate to acquire a second property to welcome travelers—La Casetta! This spacious little house features two bedrooms and two bathrooms, with a whimsical nod to 1960s Italian design. Eileen, an art historian by profession, oversaw the restoration and design of the property, which was completed in 2021. Thanks to her keen eye, guests can now admire the chestnut beams, alcove ceilings, and terrazzo counters and floors. The result is a perfectly harmonious blend of vintage furniture and decor within an even older structure.
The perfect reading nook in the living room.
La dolce vita
in Collazzone
Lunch in the shade of the trees.
At La Casetta, the day begins with the gentle sound of the church bells from San Lorenzo. On Sunday mornings, you can even hear the choir. A favorite activity of guests is watching the local grandfathers tend to their vegetable gardens or enjoying an espresso in the village square. When lunchtime rolls around, it’s all about savoring local specialties! Eileen highly recommends trying the strangozzi cacio e pepe or a wood-fired pizza at one of Collazzone’s cozy trattorias.
Afternoons are for relaxation: take a leisurely stroll through the hilltop town of San Terenziano, wander through chestnut forests and olive groves, or, for the more adventurous, embark on a hike. The day winds down just as it began, mingling with the locals while sipping a spritz on a terrace. Alternatively, you might choose to dine at La Casetta, where a large wooden table overlooking the garden and a kitchen with a fireplace offer the perfect setting, complete with a panoramic view of the valley. Perhaps a final swim in the pool before the day comes to a close?
Hosts who go
the extra mile
A vacation home is wonderful, but a boutique hotel experience is even better! At La Casetta, you can arrange for a private chef, excursions, bike tours, truffle hunting, or even cooking classes (to make spaghetti al tartufo, if the harvest is good). Another delightful option is a wine tasting on the terrace of the organic vineyard Agri Segretum, managed by Eileen’s husband.
Like their olive oil, the wine produced by the couple under the DOC Todi label is both popular and in limited supply. Make sure to sneak a bottle into your suitcase before you leave. Each year, during the harvest season, villagers gather at the vineyard to pick grapes—a unique and memorable experience that could be another must-do on your Umbria vacation list.
