"The house opens the door to endless possibilities: browsing antique markets, exploring the local farmers' market, or cycling through the rolling hills of the Perche to discover its picturesque landscapes."

Originally from the Basque Country, Amandine was considering a return to her roots—and to nature—after experiencing lockdown in Paris. However, it was in the Perche region that the co-founder of the Gommez Vaez architectural studio found her new home, discovering a charming house in the picturesque village of Verneuil d’Avre et d’Iton. Naming it La Maison de Jojo in honor of her son Joseph, Amandine set out to renovate this characterful, typically Norman building.

Transforming it into a charming countryside-village retreat, Amandine restored and modernized the interiors while preserving the unique character of La Maison de Jojo: its stunning timber-framed facade, its quaint garden with a hidden fish pond, and its original materials. The result is a home full of charm and comfort, inviting guests to enjoy quality time in this Norman village—whether working remotely, reading by the stove, or watching children play in the dedicated room filled with toys once cherished by Joseph. The perfect family home, Normandy style!

To refresh the building without compromising its character, Amandine carefully preserved the elements that define its charm: the terracotta tiles on the garden-level floor, the rounded step in the dining room, and the original beams, which she “sanded” to lighten and modernize the space while enhancing its brightness.

She didn’t stop there. New openings were added, turning rooms into cross-through spaces that offer garden views and invite more natural light indoors. The former storage shed was transformed into a cozy winter garden, ideal for reading or napping. By removing a load-bearing wall, she expanded the kitchen and connected it to the dining area. “I wanted a functional kitchen, the complete opposite of the cramped dining spaces in Paris—a place to host friends and family,” Amandine explains.

A perfectly curated
decor

To design the layout and decor of La Maison de Jojo, Amandine drew inspiration from both local country homes and city apartments. The result? A harmonious balance and a joyful blend of styles.

Travel souvenirs, like Moroccan lights brought back from Marrakech, are paired with family heirlooms—such as the console, bar, and trolley in the living room—and timeless materials, each piece contributing to the home’s unique story. The master suite, with its terracotta walls and a bathtub surrounded by Moroccan bejmat tiles, invites guests on a journey, while the entire house seamlessly combines modern comfort with old-world charm. The atmosphere is both relaxed and immersive, just 1.5 hours from Paris.”This house is a mix of everything I love!” sums up the delighted owner.

Everywhere, charming details.

"This house is a peaceful haven to disconnect from the hectic Parisian life."

The countryside
calls to us

After the market, it's time to get cooking.

After the market, it's time to get cooking.

“We wanted to create an immersion in nature without sacrificing the comforts of ‘city’ life: here, you can enjoy a coffee on the terrace or stroll to the Saturday market on foot,” say the architects, eager to escape the hustle and bustle of the capital where she lives.

Designed for families seeking to disconnect, the house embodies warmth and tranquility, offering an ideal setting for relaxation. In the morning, you wake up to the sound of the nearby church bells before taking a short walk to the bakery just steps away. Throughout the day, there’s no shortage of activities nearby: lively flea markets, a local farmers’ market on Saturday mornings, or bike rides from Verneuil-sur-Avre to explore the rolling landscapes of the Perche. A peaceful life, in tune with the rhythm of the village.
