Casa Ladoit

A decor-perfect home nestled amidst the Burgundian vineyards

In Burgundy, at the heart of the family wine estate, Margaux and Baptiste have built a wooden house where they can spend weekends and vacations in the countryside. Open on all sides to the vineyards, Casa Ladoit offers a welcome break from nature.

A decor-perfect home nestled amidst the Burgundian vineyards

"In one of the bedrooms, the window is wider than the bed, creating the impression of sleeping outdoors. It's especially beautiful during a storm!"

Amidst the vineyards of the village of Mercurey, a distinctive rectangular house made of light wood stands out. It’s not a typical ‘vineyard shack’—those small buildings once used as temporary or seasonal residences during the grape harvest—but Casa Ladoit! This house tells the story of Margaux and her family, who returned to Burgundy after a few years in Paris. Margaux, a former schoolteacher turned interior architect and now head of Studio Ladoit in Lyon, is also the granddaughter and daughter of winemakers. This heritage inspired her to create Casa Ladoit: a 90-square-meter wooden house for seven people, built on the family vineyard (cultivated for thirteen generations!) in Mercurey, on Rue du Champ Ladoit—naturally!

Amidst the vineyards

Casa Ladoit seems to sprout directly from the ground, seamlessly blending into the estate’s vineyards. Margaux, who envisioned this abode, left nothing to chance. She chose a structure on stilts, without foundations, to avoid disturbing the orchard soil. The use of wood helps maintain the natural vegetation and creates architecture in harmony with the environment. In Margaux’s inspired vision, wood is self-sufficient, eliminating the need for excessive decoration, paint, or wallpaper.

Continuing the eco-friendly approach, special attention was given to insulation, making a small wood stove sufficient to heat the 90 square meters. To find coolness during the peak summer sun, one can retreat to the east terrace, shaded by a pergola adorned with wisterias. Inside, the spacious central living area with an open kitchen is surrounded by three bedrooms and a bathroom. It’s the quintessential family-friendly home.

Minimalism & serenity

According to Margaux, her ‘role as an architect is to transform by creating harmony between beauty and functionality, playing with contrasts, materials, and volumes to bring spaces to life.’ This goal is successfully achieved at Casa Ladoit, with its minimalist ambiance highlighted by wood, waxed concrete floors, and light colors. The inspirations drawn from both Southern homes, with their white and minimalist aesthetic, and Nordic homes, where wood reigns supreme, complement each other perfectly!

Continuing in the spirit of minimalism, much of the furniture was directly integrated into the house: bed bases, bunk beds, countertops, shower walls, and closets were assembled simultaneously with the structure. The rest of the furniture was sourced from the Puces du Canal flea market in Lyon, where the family enjoys treasure hunting. Other pieces were brought back from the Netherlands, like the Lumalano wool pendants in the kitchen, and from Morocco, where the garden furniture, chairs, and loungers were custom-made by an artisan in the souk of Marrakech. The result? A vacation feeling, all year round.

Slow holidays
at the pace of the vineyard

Thanks to the large openings that frame the landscape, the rooms are bathed in light, even on misty days. Throughout the year, life in this house follows the rhythm of nature and its changes. In summer, everything is opened up, and life happens outdoors. During the harvest season, Margaux enjoys watching the grape pickers from her lounge chair. As autumn sets in, you can observe the vines turning russet while sipping on the estate’s white or red wine. When winter arrives, it’s time to light the stove and enjoy the cozy warmth inside.

Nevertheless, the main attraction of the area is undoubtedly the wine! Margaux’s sister, a wine merchant—proving the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree—organizes wine tastings as well as vineyard tours. Sun loungers, board games, and badminton rackets provide entertainment for the afternoons. The region is also full of forests, castles, and villages to explore. There’s plenty to drink and see at Casa Ladoit!
